The pH scale is a measure of hydronium ion concentration (hydrogen ions plus water) and thus of acidity. The scale is logarithmic and has values 0 to 14. Each whole number is 10 times larger or smaller than the next number, i.e., pH of 2 is 10 times stronger in acidity than a pH of 3. Even though higher alkalinity, high pH helps the cleaning process, it can adversely affect dyes, wool and stain resistance of 5th generation-type nylon fibers.
